When you import or clone a project for the first time, IntelliJ IDEA analyzes it. If your project contains submodules, they will also be cloned and automatically registered as project roots. Also, IntelliJ IDEA automatically switches to Git from WSL for projects that are opened when you use the \\wsl$ path. If Git is not installed on Windows, IntelliJ IDEA searches for Git in WSL and uses it from there.

IntelliJ IDEA supports Git from the Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2), which is available in Windows 10 version 2004. If the IDE can't locate a Git executable, it suggests downloading it. When you clone an existing Git repository, or put an existing project under Git version control, IntelliJ IDEA automatically detects if Git is installed on your computer.
